Ever think about 'the end of the world'?

I'm not talking about the Biblical apocalypse, but more on the order
of another 9-11, Katrina, or some other made-made or natural
disaster in your neck of the woods. Another Rodney King trial can
be enough to cause chaos and stress out most public services and
disrupt 'life as usual'.

The more I think about technology, and how we as a society have
become so dependant on it, the more I'm trying to lessen my
dependence on it.

Ever think about what should happen if you'd lose your electricity
for a few days or longer.  Remember the power grid failure a few
years back in the NE US and Canada? After a day or two, the
back-up batteries are dead and almost nothing works. Cell phones,
banks, gas pumps, your home appliances and lights, most city
water supplies, even the cash registers at your favorite store will
cease to function.  Just about everything you take for granted,
exists solely due to a normally reliable supply of electricity. You
can't even buy a Big Mac when the computer's down. Actually, I
don't think they can even make them without the computer! Here's a
link to a web site that, even if it's not quite the 'end of the world' as
we know it, can help you be prepared for those days when we will
be without the everyday conveniences we take so much for
granted.  It's a safe bet it's not if, but when!

I still need to get a generator so I can at least keep the food in the
freezer, but if my power goes out for more than a few days, at least I
won't be  freezing or stumbling around in the dark. Many thanks to-
